Kate Devlin, Medical Correspondent, recently reported for Daily Telegraph the following:

Teenagers who listen to music for more than an hour every day are more likely to suffer headaches than other youngsters, a new study shows.

Experts have previously warned that teenagers could be putting their hearing at risk by listening to music on personal devices, such as the iPod, too loudly.

However, evidence of any link between headaches and migraines and gadgets such as music players, mobile phones or computers has been limited.

The study compared the habits of 1,025 teenagers, all of whom were aged between 13-17.

The findings, published in the journal BMC Neurology, show that listening to one or two hours of music every day was linked to head pain.

Astrid Milde-Busch, from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, who led the study, said that there had been a need for the research.

"Studies into the occurrence of headaches have had mixed results and for some types of media, in particular computer games, are completely lacking," she said.

However, she said that the findings did not reveal if it was listening to music which was creating the head pain in the teenagers.

"It cannot be concluded whether the habit of listening to music is the cause of frequent headaches, or the consequence ? in the sense a self-therapy by relaxation," she said.

Of those interviewed 489 of the teenagers claimed to suffer from headaches and 536 said that they did not.

However, use of their mobile phones, playing computer games or watching television was not linked to head pain, the researchers found.
